A Phased Approach to Becoming a Physician Assistant

If you are a physician assistant, you have a choice of exactly what type of physician assistant you want to be. If you are just starting out on your medical career, a PA is a good way to move up the ladder of success quickly while gaining direct patient care, experience, and education. A physician assistant who becomes a PA will have all of the elements that make those who become licensed medical doctors shine.

Physician assistants began to be employed in the medical field in the late 1960’s and have become a rapidly growing occupational group. Each year, as many as 60,000 PAs are hired by hospitals and other medical facilities. They work in both clinical and administrative settings, including hospitals, nursing care facilities, clinics, and private offices.

Best PAs to work for

Roles and responsibilities of physician assistants are versatile. They perform most of the tasks of a physician, with some specialized duties. In most cases, they perform Transcription, Clinical Research, Medical N ordering, EPT scheduling, REVAs, and other administrative and clinical duties.

They also perform basic laboratory tests, help with basic clinical procedures, give patients injections, conduct physical exams, and write prescriptions among other tasks. These duties are always supervised by a physician or physician assistants.

A physician assistant typically completes their education requirements by taking a college course in a health related field. They also must undergo a minimum of one year of training in physician assistant programs. These programs are offered through community colleges and other technical training schools. The basic skills required to work as a PA are taught in a curriculum which has been found to be very effective in preparing their students for hands -on performing arts.

This is often a very frustrating time for students who realize that they would love to be able to work in the medical field. It is discouraging to realize that the PA program is unique in both style and requirements.

While the educational requirements do not have a traditional end date, a PA program requires that you complete a minimum of 2-6 years of college curriculum. A partial PA program can be completed through distance learning which means you can learn the ropes by attending college classes on your own time. This does not necessarily mean that you have to completely enroll in college full-time, although you may want to do so at some point in order to become PA certified.

You will also need to think about how to pay for college education. You may be able to finance the entire cost of going to college with grants or scholarships. If you have anyone who works for you who is also going to college or you have a family member with whom you can ask for help, you may be able to get a successful application approved very quickly.

Expect to pay anywhere from $2,500 – $6,500 for college and living expenses. If you do not go through the college process, you will be required to pay for your medical education and overestimate how long it will take to complete the training program. This medical education will take as much as between one and three years to complete and will account for the cost of the schooling in the beginning of the process.

The length of time that it takes to become a Physician Assistant means that you can expect to work more than fifty hours a week once you become certified. However, the rewards are worth it in the end and you will be able to help many people each and every day that you go to work.

Once you have become PA certified, the doors will be open for you to apply for jobs in hospitals, clinics, residential care facilities, and other medical facilities. Many students who go through the Physician Assistant training are able to work in these positions while they are getting their Physician Assistant education. The Physician Assistant pay is higher than most nursing jobs, the hours are more flexible, and you will be able to help others each and every day that you go to work.
